GTNAY (Grupo Terruño Nayarita)

  • We are a model of sustainable coffee production based in Nayarit, Mexico.  Our nearly 600 coffee producers are organized in eight producing societies that are members of our vertically integrated enterprise.  Our base member societies have been cooperating for over 20 years and together we have exported 164 containers of specialty coffee since 2006 with internet traceable barcodes and serial numbers on every bag.

El Malinal Community

  • The story of El Malinal goes hand in hand with the story San Cristobal Coffee Importers, Cafés Sustentables de México (CAFESUMEX), and Grupo Terruño Nayarita (GTNay).
  • Coffee was first brought to El Malinal in the late 1800s by German immigrants. One of the finest coffee haciendas in all of Mexico was planted in the pristine Malinal rainforest high in the coastal mountains of Nayarit. In the early 20th Century, this coffee was exported exclusively to European markets, but in the wake of the Mexican revolution, the cafeteleros of Malinal and their decedents lost contact with the global coffee market, turning instead to local buyers. Nearly a century went by until the coffee of El Malinal was again exported to foreign markets.
  • In the early 1990s, Mr. Jim Kosalos became interested in coffee after a friend of his moved from Seattle to Puerto Vallarta to open a café and roastery that showcased coffee from around Mexico.
  • While visiting Puerto Vallarta, Mr. Kosalos came in contact with a representative of a coop of farmers in the community of El Malinal, Nayarit. The coop had recently been taken advantage of financially. They were in debt, and they had a container of coffee to sell. Mr. Kosalos followed the representative back to his small coffee-growing community and tasted the excellent coffee that harvest. So, he purchased this coffee and imported it to the United States.
  • For many years, San Cristobal imported only coffee from the community of El Malinal, Nayarit. Mr. Kosalos spent years in the late 1990s and early 2000s working with the producers there and living about half time there himself. The early concepts of FincaLab and the controlling of processing to maximize efficiency and reduce costs at a centralized wet mill were born on Malinal’s drying patios at this time.

SANCAFE Society

  • SANCAFE is the society representing the coffee-producing members of the El Malinal community.
  • At the time of this writing, there are 14 contributing members (or “socios” in Spanish) of the SANCAFE Society: Tomas Jimenez Isiordia, Ismael Godinez Pulido, Senorino Godinez Pulido, J. Santos Valenzuela Zepeda, Leonel Alejandro Ramirez Lopez, Leonardo Lopez Ramirez, Jose Magdaleno  Renteria Garcia, Miguel Castellon Moreno, Ismael Ramirez Miranda, Jose Leonel Ramirz Miranda, Jose Alfredo, Fermin Garcia Torres, J. Jesus Gonzalez Aspeitia, and Lucio Miranda Rodriguez.

San Cristobal Coffee Importers

  • San Cristobal, our exclusive world wide distributer, has agreed to share two bags of their selected coffee.

Traceability

  • GTNAY’s FincaLab®  process control system delivers traceability like no other, traceability that is not practically achievable through Blockchain.  These controls also allow us to assign the donated coffee to the auction winner at the moment of export.  Using the barcodes on the bags, the coffee will be scanned into the Costa Oro warehouse near Seattle and scanned out when delivered to the auction winner.
